How We Measure

At Genuine Design we understand that the sizing between items can vary. The size of the tag doesn't always equate to the size you're getting.

That is why we hand measure all of the items that come through our store. Below is a guide as to how we take those measurements.

The best way to determine if something will fit you is to look at the measurements. Don't worry about the tag size, it's only approximate. Take one of your best fitting garments and compare those measurements against the item that you're interested in.

All of our measurements are taken by hand. How they are taken is displayed below.

Jacket Measurements

Jacket length (total length) is measured from the back of the garment. Then base of the collar (at the seam) down to the bottom of the garment. Measure straight down. This measurement is usually best taken when the garment is hanging or laying flat. (Note: some garments, almost all tailored clothing, the front will be slightly longer than the back. The back length is the most important.)

Shoulders are measured from the shoulder seam, taken from the back, straight across to the other shoulder seem. Almost all garments will be between 15-21" unless extra small or extra large. This measurement is usually best taken when the garment is hanging or laying flat.

Chest is taken armpit to armpit seams, straight across, measuring full diameter. Ensure all buttons and/or zippers are done up.

Sleeve is measured from the top of the shoulder seam, where the sleeve head and shoulder meet. Measure from that seam straight down to the bottom of the cuff.

Shirt Measurements

All shirt measurements are best taken with the garment lying flat. Also, this is how you would measure sweaters, knits, tees and almost all other tops.

Pant Measurements

All pant measurements are best taken with the garment lying flat.

Waist is measured with the waist done up. Button and zipper closed. Measure from the inside of the waistband straight across to the other side.

Rise is measured at the front. Measure from the crotch seam up to the top of the waist band.

Outseam is measured from the top of the waist band all the way down to the bottom of the pant.

Inseam is taken from the seam at the crotch of the pant all the way down to the bottom of the pant.

Leg opening is measured edge to edge, straight across, at the opening of the pant.
